How Often Should You Detail Your Car?

No matter how often you clean your car, there is cleaning to do that is sometimes best left to the professionals. I vacuum and wipe down every week, but I'm not deep cleaning the carpets, or getting into every crevice.

And I'm certainly not detailing the engine, or the tires, or the lights, or other things that you "should" be cleaning. That's not something I have the skill set to tackle on a regular basis, and it definitely would take more time than I'd be willing to spend. My husband and I often do a "cost versus labor" analysis when we're looking at big jobs. Sure, it would be more economical for us to rent a carpet shampooer, get it home, move all the furniture ourselves, figure out how to USE the shampooer, actually use it, then let the carpet dry, move the furniture back, and return it. But we can also hire a company and save ourselves a huge amount of time and effort. We're the same when it comes to doing the deep cleaning of the cars. We'll tackle the weekly upkeep, but we also know that professionals are there for a reason.

So, how often?

The recommendation is about every 6 months. Less if you don't do a ton of upkeep, six months if you're pretty good about cleaning on a regular basis.

Most of the recommendations suggest you get your professional detailing done seasonally. End of summer and end of winter are the two times that make the most sense. It's also recommended to have the carpets detailed if there's been a mess - a coffee spill, muddy shoes after sports, when the roads are full of slush and salt - because the longer that mess is allowed to sit there, the harder it will be to remove.
